SAHMRI is in the process of establishing the Australian Bragg Centre for Proton Therapy and Research (ABCPTR). Located in the heart of South Australia’s prestigious health and biomedical research precinct, the ABCPTR is currently under construction and will be Australia’s first proton therapy centre and the first centre of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

The purpose of this role is to provide leadership in and contribute to the establishment of a comparative planning service at the Australian Bragg Centre for Proton Therapy and Research prior to the commencement of clinical operations. The scope of the role will include co-ordination of and participation in a proton/photon comparative planning service.

Reporting to the Finance Director of the ABCPTR, the position will also work closely with all members of the ABCPTR team including Radiation Oncologists, Medical Physicists, Radiation Therapists, Registry Project Manager and Project Executives.

About the Role

Key responsibilities include:

  • Co-ordinating the referral pathway for comparative planning at the ABCPTR
  • Co-ordinating the MBS billing logistics for comparative planning at the ABCPTR
  • Working with the Registry Project Manager to establish workflows for the storage of comparative planning DICOM data in the ABCPTR ProKnow database
  • Generating proton/photon comparative plans
  • Co-ordinating multi-disciplinary team meetings to review comparative planning cases
  • Co-ordinating one or more part-time comparative planning radiation therapists
  • Training radiation therapists in proton therapy concepts

About You

The successful candidate will possess the following key attributes:

  • Relevant degree in medical radiation sciences or equivalent
  • Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency
  • At least 10 years’ experience as a clinical radiation therapist
  • Experience in the field of proton therapy is desirable
  • Experience with treatment planning of advanced radiotherapy techniques
  • Experience in establishing new radiation therapy services
  • Demonstrated experience in establishing, maintaining and reviewing systems, practices, protocols, policies and procedures.

  • Implementing a referral workflow for comparative planning at the ABCPTR
  • Implementing a videoconferencing system for multidisciplinary team meetings with local and national referrers
  • Generating comparative planning procedure documents
  • Ensuring incoming referrals are addressed in a timely manner
  • Generating comparative proton and photon treatment plans in a timely manner
  • Generating written summary reports on the outcome of comparative treatment plans

About You

The successful candidate will possess the following key attributes:

  • Relevant degree in medical radiation sciences or equivalent
  • Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency
  • At least 3 years’ experience as a clinical radiation therapist
  • Experience in the field of proton therapy is desirable
  • Experience with advanced radiotherapy treatment planning techniques
  • Demonstrated experience in establishing, maintaining and reviewing systems, practices, protocols, policies and procedures.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Reporting initially to the SAHMRI Executive General Manager – Corporate Services and Commercial Enterprises, the position will also work closely with all members of the ABCPTR team including Radiation Oncologists, Medical Physicists, Radiation Therapists, Registry Project Manager and Project Executives.

 About the Role

Key responsibilities include:

  • Integration of a Clinical Operating Partner with SAHMRI to establish the operating entity of the ABCPTR.
  • Co-ordinating the procurement of an Oncology Information System and Treatment Planning System for the ABCPTR.
  • Ensuring external communication about the ABCPTR is accurate, informative and engaging.
  • Working with Professional College and University partners in the development of education and training platforms
  • Co-ordinating the procurement of a CT-Simulator and MR-Simulator
  • Co-ordinating the procurement of a surface guided radiotherapy system
  • Working with ABCPTR affiliated Radiation Oncologists in the establishment of a National Referral Network, to ensure patients from across Australia and overseas have a clear and efficient means of accessing PBT.
  • Co-ordinating interaction with SA Health representatives in relation to proton therapy activities
  • Working with Charity and Non-Government Organisations to establish support services for patients

About You

The successful candidate will possess the following key attributes:

  • Relevant degree in a healthcare related field, project management or business administration
  • Experience working in a cancer service provision and preferably radiation oncology
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the field of proton therapy
  • Experience implementing new healthcare services, preferably new radiotherapy services
  • Experience in procurement of large medical device contracts
  • Demonstrated experience in project management

Reporting to the Lead Medical Physicist of the ABCPTR, the position will also work closely with all members of the ABCPTR team including Radiation Oncologists, Radiation Therapists, Implementation Project Managers, Registry Project Manager and Project Executives.

About the Role

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing a strategic technical and translational research plan for the ABCPTR in-line with organisation objectives and available infrastructure
  • Supervising postgraduate research students from a range of disciplines
  • Promoting collaboration with the ABCPTR by other clinical and research organisations
  • Liaise with managers and members of the multidisciplinary teams of contributors regarding project planning and maintenance of effective work relations.
  • Working with the Registry Project Manager to establish workflows for the storage of comparative planning DICOM data in the ABCPTR ProKnow database
  • Ensure the effective management of data processing operations within the unit through appropriate planning and allocation of resources to achieve agreed business and strategic plans.

About You

The successful candidate will possess the following key attributes:

  • ACPSEM accredited degree in medical physics
  • PhD in medical physics related field
  • Registration with the ACPSEM as a Certified Radiation Oncology Medical Physicist
  • At least 5 years’ experience as a clinical medical physicist
  • Experience in attracting research grant funding
  • Scientific computing skills, preferably in Geant4 and python
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals of proton therapy treatment planning
  • A strong research publication track record
